Holy Trinity Church

High Street
Bosham
Chichester
West Sussex
England
PO18 8LY

From a photographer’s perspective, this is one of a small collection of ‘perfect’ churches. The Cannon in charge of the ceremony here could not have been more helpful and jolly. The church itself is pretty and unusually light inside which for a church of this age is unheard of.

If you want to keep your wedding local, the green outside the Church is perfect for photos with the river as a background and for your reception there is the lovely Bosham Sailing club right next door.

History of Holy Trinity Church

Holy Trinity Church in Bosham, one of the oldest Christian sites on the south coast of England, boasts a rich and fascinating history. The church is notably depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry, highlighting its historical significance during the Norman Conquest. It’s believed that a church has been on this site since the Saxon era, possibly founded during the reign of Cynegils of Wessex around 630 AD.

The current building features elements from various periods, including a chancel and tower dating back to the Norman era in the 11th century. Its architectural details, like the unique Saxon arch and the beautifully preserved Norman stonework, tell the story of its long-standing spiritual and community role in Bosham.

Holy Trinity is also linked to several historical figures and legends. It is said that King Canute’s daughter was drowned nearby and subsequently buried at the church, her grave marked for centuries by villagers. The church has served not just as a place of worship but as a community landmark, bearing witness to the unfolding history of Bosham itself.

Today, Holy Trinity continues to be a focal point for the community, attracting visitors not only for its historical significance and architectural beauty but also for its serene setting by the water, providing a picturesque scene that captures the essence of this historic village.
