Wet wedding on the Dorset Queen and Brownsea Island

I really wanted to be a Brownsea Island Wedding Photographer on this wonderful oasis that sits in the centre of Poole Harbour. When Lucy and Tom asked if I’d join them for their wedding on the island I jumped at the chance. Every Thursday in the summer I’d sail by Brownsea Island which happened to be the finish line for Royal Motor Yacht club races and hear the church bells ring.

Lucy and Tom were such an amazing couple to work with, so happy and went with the flow when the weather was against us. After a postponement, they chose to have a smaller celebration with the ceremony and a larger party later in the year. We had so much fun on the day. It started from the Royal Motor Yacht club being picked up from the pontoon by the Dorset Queen a ferry that I’d been on a few times over the years for weddings then onto Brownsea Island.

The church on Browsea Island has no power and it is lit by candlelight, on a summer’s day with plenty of light it’s enough but this was a dark and stormy autumnal wedding. To say it tested my camera equipment was an understatement but when you employ a professional Brownsea Island wedding photographer that is when you pay for when it’s sunny the job isn’t too difficult but when the weather is against you we certainly earn our keep.

Masks and Umbrellas

Personal protection was a necessity on the day, COVID was still a threat and so was the weather. Umbrellas make great photography though. On Brownsea Island there is a viewpoint that we’d planned to visit, even in the rain Lucy and Tom braved the mud, there wasn’t much of a view but cuddling under the umbrella made a dramatic scene.

Dorset Queen wedding photographer

The Dorset Queen is a boat I’m familiar with and enjoy spending time on. After a long time inside over lockdown, the expanse of Poole Harbour was a welcome sight. we cruised up the harbour to Poole Quay while the guests enjoyed some snacks, chat and champagne. When we arrived at Poole Quay the final destination was Hotel Du Vin, a lovely boutique hotel that has been popular for smaller post covid weddings. The wine cellar is immense, if you get a chance to attend a tasting there I’d highly recommend it.
