Photography around Dorset

Congratulations on your engagement, I’m assuming you’re in here after the big question was asked and now you’re lost in a world of wedding vendors. It’s bewildering, isn’t it?

I’m fortunate as a Dorset Wedding photographer to have access to some of the most breathtaking locations in the UK. Dorset is one of the most picturesque counties in England, known for its dramatic coastline, historic villages, and diverse landscapes. From the cliffs of the Jurassic coast to the rolling countryside dotted with historic castles and manor houses, Dorset provides the perfect backdrop for any special occasion. However, my photographs are not just about capturing a big day – it’s about including the beauty and charm of the county where I live.
I moved to Poole in Dorset in my early twenties, drawn to the relaxed charm of this South Coast County and now, years later, my children enjoy the Sandbanks Peninsula and Poole Harbour, which is now officially the largest natural harbour in the world, as their playground while they feast on Dorset Apple cake. Sometimes I have to remind myself of that choice to move away from the city and appreciate that I now work as a professional, photographing among the footprints of dinosaurs.

“He slotted in so well and we’ve had so many comments from all of our guests about how kind and funny he was, and to top it off, our photos are absolutely beautiful”

What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.

Tiny Glimpses, Real Moments, Epic Stories

Telling the story of your wedding in photographs is referred to as documentary, reportage, unposed or photojournalistic. All these mean to express the story of a celebration without interfering, watching and waiting. These brief moments of love are tiny glimpses into the epic moments and stories between soul mates and friends alike.

When you look back on these photos they will bring back not only the memory but the emotional connection.

Dramatic Light, Emotional Shadows

Crafting bold and dramatic portraits goes beyond mere photography; it’s about capturing the essence of emotion and the intensity of the moment in a single, stunning frame. These portraits are not just pictures; they are vivid stories told through light, shadow, and expression. They highlight the profound connections and raw emotions of the day. Such images stand out for their depth and power, each one a striking artwork that boldly narrates your love story.

You’ll want to print these big and share them far and wide.

the Dorset photographer who wins international awards

While my journey as a photographer has been driven by passion and the joy of using my camera to spread joy, I’ve recently been honoured with some recognitions that I’m truly grateful for.

Its not only Dorset locals that appreciate my photographs I am delighted to share that I’ve been ranked among the top 50 international artistic wedding photographers and the top 100 international documentary wedding photographers.

Many of my photos have also won individual awards, showcasing the unique beauty of each moment captured. Most of these were shot right here on the rolling hills of Dorset. These accolades are a testament to the amazing couples I’ve had the pleasure of working with and the stunning moments we’ve created together. I thank these couples for trusting me to capture their special day. Here’s to many more cherished memories!

The Unique Landscapes of Dorset

One of the biggest draws of Dorset is the variety of landscapes it offers. Whether it’s the rugged coastline, quaint villages, or sprawling countryside, each location has its charm.
Close to my home is the Jurassic Coast, A UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Jurassic Coast is famous for its dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and prehistoric fossils found by the now infamous Mary Anning. Iconic landmarks such as Old Harry Rocks, Lulworth Cove, and Durdle Door, a favourite with photographers trying to ‘thread the needle’ at sunrise where the sun is perfectly aligned with the stone arch.
Golden Beaches: Dorset is home to some of the UK’s most beautiful beaches, including Chesil Beach, Studland Bay, and Lyme Regis Cobb. The soft light of sunrise and sunset makes these provide stunning scenery for landscape and portrait photography.

Rolling Countryside & Heathlands
Beyond the coastline, Dorset features miles of unspoiled countryside, from the Purbeck Hills to Blackmore Vale. Wildflower meadows, ancient woodlands, and vast heathlands create a variety of breathtaking backdrops.
Historic Towns & Villages
Dorset’s market towns and villages offer a glimpse into the past, with their cobblestone streets, thatched cottages, and historic landmarks. Towns like Sherborne, Shaftesbury, and Corfe Castle are perfect for capturing a sense of history and romance.
Charming Village Scenes
The golden glow of Shaftesbury’s Gold Hill or the quaint cottages of Abbotsbury and Milton Abbas provide timeless images of English rural life.
A Place of History and Literature
Dorset’s rich history and literary connections make it even more special. The county has inspired Thomas Hardy, one of England’s greatest writers, who based many of his novels on real-life Dorset locations. Max Gate, Hardy’s former home, and the landscapes of ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles’ and ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ imagine having the same inspiration for your wedding. Historic buildings such as Lulworth Castle, Athelhampton House, and Highcliffe Castle add grandeur and elegance to Dorset’s landscape. Many of these sites have witnessed centuries of history, making them fascinating places to explore and photograph, many weddings become part of that history as they are now phenomenal wedding venues.
Dorset’s Coastal & Countryside Charm
The diversity of Dorset’s landscapes allows for a variety of photographic styles. The county’s mix of coast, countryside, and historic architecture means every location offers something different.
Dramatic Seascapes
Capturing the waves crashing against the cliffs at Portland Bill or the surf at Kimmeridge Bay provides stunning contrast and texture.
Sunset Views
Dorset’s west-facing beaches, such as Lyme Regis and West Bay, offer some of the best sunset photography spots in the UK, even filmmakers agree. The series Broadchurch was filmed here.
Wildlife and Nature
Dorset is home to diverse wildlife, from the deer of Arne Nature Reserve to the seabirds along the Chalk Cliffs.
Food, Traditions & Local Charm
Dorset isn’t just about scenery—it’s also known for its local traditions and food. The county is home to unique delicacies such as Dorset Knobs (a hard biscuit) and Dorset Blue Vinny Cheese. Local markets in towns like Bridport and Dorchester bring a lively atmosphere and showcase the best of Dorset’s produce.

The history of smugglers and hidden coastal caves adds an air of mystery to the county, with places like Moonfleet Bay and the Isle of Portland having fascinating stories tied to Dorset’s past. Capturing these elements in photography helps to tell the deeper story of the county beyond its landscapes.

Don’t take my word for it

It is important to do your research and take a look through the reviews left on Google by past couples. Many couples praise me for capturing all the photos from various angles, making them feel comfortable, and providing a fantastic overall experience. These are independent of my website so you know they are truthful. I pride myself on lasting relationships with my customers, lots become lifelong friends and often photograph their children once they appear. My approach emphasises documentary photography, capturing natural, authentic, and timeless moments, full of life and love

Yes, I’m a Dorset-based photographer but
I have a camera, a bag and I will travel!

Although I live here on the Jurassic Coast I do escape to visit other counties. The cost of travel is something that can affect the price of your package but most of the time it is inclusive (within 100 miles of Poole). I feel fortunate that I can travel for my job, seeing new places and exploring new venues is a perk of the job and it keeps me creative, that’s how awards are won.

All are welcome here

There has been a lot of talk about inclusivity in recent times. That has never been in question here.

We are all working this shift on spaceship Earth travelling through the cosmos together. We all have the same struggles and joys experiencing life in this momentary blink of existence so let us come together and celebrate this shared experience, rather than focus on our differences.
